Tea was introduced to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) by the British
in the 1800s after a coffee disease. In 1867, James Taylor
started the first tea estate in Kandy. The hill country’s cool
climate was perfect for tea, and it quickly became a major
export. Today, Sri Lanka is known worldwide for its high-
quality Ceylon tea.
